The Department of Obstetrics & Gynecology, Division of Women’s Genetics at Columbia University Irving Medical Center, is seeking a highly motivated, intellectually curious, board-certified genetic counselor to serve as the Lead Genetic Counselor for the Division’s reproductive genetics and hereditary cancer genetics programs. This role combines advanced clinical genetic counseling responsibilities with leadership and operational oversight within the Division of Women’s Genetics. The genetic counselor will provide reproductive/prenatal and hereditary cancer genetic counseling services to patients across clinical practice settings within the Department of Obstetrics & Gynecology. Responsibilities include providing genetic counseling via telehealth and in-person consultations, coordinating genetic testing and follow-up, reviewing medical records, communicating results to patients and providers, and supporting clinical genetics operations within the Division. As part of reproductive genetics services, the genetic counselor will work closely with Maternal Fetal Medicine, pediatric specialists, and the Center for Prenatal Pediatrics in the care of patients with fetal anomalies and routine prenatal indications. The genetic counselor will additionally provide hereditary cancer genetic counseling services for patients within the Department of OB/GYN, including those seen through the Gynecologic Oncology Hereditary Breast and Ovarian Cancer (HBOC) program. In addition to direct patient care responsibilities, this role will lead hereditary cancer genetics operations and program development efforts within the Division of Women’s Genetics. Responsibilities include oversight of workflow optimization, development and implementation of standard operating procedures, expansion of genetic testing access across Department clinical practices, implementation of Epic-based genetics workflows, and training and mentorship of genetic counselors participating in hereditary cancer genetics services. As an academic medical center, Columbia University’s Department of OB/GYN is actively involved in clinical research and education. The genetic counselor will participate in research activities including patient screening, informed consent discussions, and support of clinical genetics research initiatives. The genetic counselor will also supervise students enrolled in the Columbia University Genetic Counseling Graduate Program during reproductive and cancer genetics fieldwork rotations and contribute to educational activities within the training program. The Columbia environment is at the forefront of clinical genetics and genomic medicine. The genetic counselor will work closely with physicians, fellows, laboratory specialists, nursing staff, and other members of the Division of Women’s Genetics. The genetic counselor may practice at various Department clinical locations throughout New York City and the Westchester/Hudson Valley region; local travel may therefore be required. Responsibilities Provide reproductive/prenatal and hereditary cancer genetic counseling services for pre- and post-test patients Coordinate genetic testing, result disclosure, and follow-up care for patients within the Department of OB/GYN Develop, implement, and maintain standard operating procedures (SOPs) related to genetic testing workflows and results management Lead operational oversight and workflow optimization for hereditary cancer genetics services within the Division of Women’s Genetics Support expansion and integration of hereditary cancer genetic testing services across Department clinical practices Facilitate onboarding, training, and mentorship of genetic counselors participating in hereditary cancer genetics services Participate in research initiatives and support clinical genetics research activities Supervise and mentor genetic counseling graduate students during reproductive and cancer genetics fieldwork rotations Contribute to educational programming, lectures, and provider education initiatives Support Epic and digital health initiatives related to genetics workflows and population screening programs Participate in departmental committees, quality improvement initiatives, and academic activities as appropriate Minimum Qualifications Master’s Degree in Genetic Counseling Board certified as a Genetic Counselor by the American Board of Genetic Counseling Minimum of five years of experience in reproductive/prenatal and cancer genetic counseling services Preferred Qualifications Ability to work independently and within a clinical genetics team Experience in hereditary cancer and reproductive/prenatal genetic counseling Experience developing clinical workflows, operational processes, or programmatic initiatives Interest in graduate student supervision, mentorship, and teaching Excellent oral and written communication skills Conversational Spanish preferred but not required Columbia University is an Equal Opportunity Employer / Disability / Veteran Pay Transparency Disclosure The salary of the finalist selected for this role will be set based on a variety of factors, including but not limited to departmental budgets, qualifications, experience, education, licenses, specialty, and training.
